The Burden I Can’t Shake

Chapter Reading: Matthew 11 | Verse of the Day: Matthew 11:28

You can fake a smile. You can post something polished. You can answer “I’m fine.” But if we could peel back the spiritual weight some of us are carrying, we’d find souls sagging like overstuffed backpacks at the end of a summer hike.

And no one seems to notice—except Jesus.

“Come to Me, all who are weary and heavy-laden, and I will give you rest.” — Matthew 11:28,

In The Pilgrim’s Progress, Christian begins his journey with a burden on his back. It isn’t physical—it’s spiritual. It’s guilt, shame, regret, fear. And the more he tries to carry it through effort or morality, the heavier it gets. Only when he comes to the Cross does the burden roll away.

You might know exactly what that feels like.

Some burdens we’ve worn so long, they feel like part of our identity. We assume, This is just who I am. I overthink. I carry guilt. I live tired. But Jesus doesn’t call the strong to come to Him—He calls the worn out. The exhausted. The ones hiding under the weight of what they can’t fix.

If your soul is dragging today, hear the invitation again. Not to religion. Not to performance. Not to perfection.

To Jesus.

He doesn’t just relieve your burden. He receives it.

Application

  • What burden are you carrying today that Christ already bore?
  • Read Matthew 11 aloud, then take five minutes in silence: breathe deeply, and whisper His name.
  • Write down what “rest” would look like for your soul right now—and ask Jesus for it.

This theme echoes the earliest steps of The Pilgrim’s Progress, when Christian learns he can’t carry his burden alone. For more on how the gospel gives real rest in a restless world, tune in to any of our podcasts at ShoeLeatherGospel.com.

Closing Prayer

Jesus, You don’t ask me to carry the weight—You carried it to the Cross. I bring it to You now. Give me Your rest.

Today’s to-do list can wait. Go lay your burden down before the One who already carried it up the hill for you.
