The City of Distraction

Chapter Reading: Hebrews 12 | Verse of the Day: Hebrews 12:1–2

Imagine trying to drive through downtown traffic with ten phones ringing, five GPS systems shouting conflicting directions, and your mother FaceTiming to remind you that you forgot to call. That’s not a metaphor. That’s Tuesday for most of us.

And yet, spiritual life isn’t so different. We try to follow Jesus while juggling a dozen distractions, wondering why we’re stuck in gridlock.

“Therefore, since we have so great a cloud of witnesses surrounding us, laying aside every weight and the sin which so easily entangles us, let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of faith…” — Hebrews 12:1–2

In The Pilgrim’s Progress, Christian flees the City of Destruction with a heavy burden on his back and his fingers in his ears, crying, “Life! Life! Eternal life!” Everyone around him thought he was nuts. But Christian had seen the truth—his city was doomed, and distraction was deadly.

Today, we don’t live in the City of Destruction—we commute there daily. Between TikTok scrolls, endless news cycles, and spiritual apathy disguised as “being busy,” we’re constantly pulled from our purpose.

Hebrews 12 reminds us: if you want to run this race well, you’ve got to drop the dead weight. Distraction isn’t just inconvenient—it’s entangling. And the more we tangle ourselves in side quests, the less we live for the glory of the finish line.

Jesus isn’t calling us to multitask our way to maturity. He calls us to fix our eyes on Him—undistracted, unflinching, and unburdened.

Application

  • What distractions are pulling your eyes off Jesus right now?
  • Try a 24-hour “distraction fast”—no social media, no background noise, just the Word.
  • Each morning this week, pray: “Lord, fix my eyes on You today—clear my vision and calm my pace.”

Today’s devotional connects with The Pilgrim’s Progress theme of fleeing the City of Destruction. Want more? Check out our podcasts—each one designed to help you walk out your faith with clarity in a noisy world. Visit ShoeLeatherGospel.com to listen or subscribe.

Closing Prayer

Jesus, help me lay down what distracts and lift my eyes to what lasts. Let me run this race with joy, and my eyes fixed only on You.

Today, don’t just put your phone down—put your hope up. Heaven is ahead, and the road gets clearer the more you look up.
